Director General of the Center for Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Tengiz Tsertsvadze spoke about the latest version of Omicron on the air of Imedi TV. He said the latest variant, BA.2, is more contagious than the previous omicron variant and also causes more serious illnesses, especially pneumonia.

“BA.2, the latest version of Omicron, is 1.5 times more contagious and spreads faster than the first subcomponent of Omicron, BA.1. In addition, it causes relatively severe diseases and more often causes inflammation of the lungs.

The BA subvariant of Omicron has rarely been associated with the development of pneumonia. Most of the cases in Georgia are due to BA.2 and this is one of the reasons for the high mortality, despite the fact that the number of those vaccinated in Georgia is still very low. Especially few are vaccinated with the third, booster dose,” - said Tengiz Tsertsvadze.
