European Union Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Kherchinski commented to the media after meeting with Georgian Deputy Prime Minister Levan Davitashvili to advocate for the restoration of direct flights to Russia.

Herchinski noted that all 27 EU countries are concerned about the resumption of direct flights between Russia and Georgia.

“We had a very open and honest conversation with Vice Prime Minister Levan Davitashvili about direct flights between Russia and Georgia. I was instructed to convey to the Georgian authorities the position of the European Union, with which 27 capitals of the European Union agreed. We stated that we regret the decision of the Georgian government to resume direct flights with Russia.

We stated that this decision is contrary to the unanimous decision of all 27 EU member states not to have direct flights to and from Russia and not to allow Russian aircraft to fly over the territory of EU member states. We also expressed concern that the resumption of flights is contrary to our determination to isolate Russia and force it to change its behavior when it comes to the brutal war of aggression that Russia is still waging in Ukraine. “Indeed, the resumption of flights with Georgia was the decision of Russia, but this required coordination of the issue with the government of Georgia,” the ambassador said.
