The fifth president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, was not taken into custody by a court decision.
The judge did not satisfy the request of the prosecutor's office to arrest Poroshenko. Poroshenko was released on the basis of a "personal obligation" or subscription. He is obliged to appear in court at the first request.
Poroshenko later announced that he intends to appeal the court's decision to a higher instance.
Poroshenko returned to Kiev on January 17. From the airport, he went straight to the court, which throughout the day discussed the issue of choosing a measure of restraint for him.
As a result, the hearing was postponed, and the announcement of the verdict was postponed to January 19.
Petro Poroshenko is a defendant in the treason case. The criminal case concerns the illegal acquisition of coal in 2014-2015 in the Donbas, from territories not controlled by Kiev. The main defendant is Viktor Medvedchuk, head of the political council of the Opposition Platform party.
