Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions as "independent" territories.
"In accordance with the generally recognized principles and norms of international law, I recognize and confirm the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, which is provided for by the Charter of the United Nations, taking into account the will of the people of the Kherson region in a referendum held on September 27, 2022, I make a decision: to recognize the sovereignty and independence of the Kherson region" , the document says.
The second resolution concerns the recognition of the "sovereignty" and "independence" of the Zaporozhye region.
Before that, it was announced that on September 30, a ceremony of signing an agreement on the entry of the "people's republics" of Donetsk and Lugansk, as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye regions into Russia, would take place in the Kremlin. Vladimir Putin and deputies of the State Duma of Russia will take part in the ceremony.
